Hand Picking

Hand Picking

Hand picking is an easy way to control small invasive plant infestations but is not recommended in large areas due to the time required. The effectiveness of hand picking is not guaranteed, but when dealing with small areas, hand picking can provide an immediate resolution to control unwanted weeds. Hand picking provides a way to control weeds immediately and effectively, especially when a small population is involved.

Though labour intensive, it can be a good way to eradicate a new invasive plant before it takes hold of an area. It can also be one of the prime ways to get rid of weeds near an endangered species habitat or in boggy or wet environments where much machinery can't operate effectively. Because picking weeds by hand is so specific, it minimizes damage to desirable plants and to animals. However, hand picking typically requires several treatments to make sure the weeds in question don't reestablish themselves. Care must also be taken not to trample desirable plants in the vicinity.
